Return-to-work policy: Clearer roles, less paperwork

Getting a patient back to work in a safe, appropriate, and timely fashion can bring substantial benefits to a person’s physical, mental, economic and social well-being for those able to participate. Doctors know that. But, as the treating physician, they often get bogged down in a lengthy administrative process that is complicated, confusing and can often strain the physician-patient relationship.

To streamline the return-to-work process and clarify the physician's role, the CMA has revised its policy, Helping Your Patient Return to Work: The Role of the Treating Physician, which remains an important resource for physicians, employers and insurance companies.

On Thurs., Sept. 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm ET, the CMA will host a webinar to highlight the key changes to the policy and our recommendations to improve the process.

You’ll hear from physicians involved in shaping the updated policy, that was based on consultations with the medical profession, as well as employers, insurers, unions, and workers’ compensation boards.

This virtual session will help you: 

  • Learn why the CMA’s return-to-work policy needed a refresh (last updated in 2013).
  • Understand the consultation process, including who we spoke to and what we heard.
  • Identify key updates and the implications for physicians and patients.
  • Clarify the physician’s role and responsibilities, and that of the employer, in the return-to-work process.
  • Demonstrate how the revised policy can be applied to help support a patient’s return to work.
  • Explore the CMA’s recommendations for a more streamlined and simplified process.
