MSPEI’s Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Program is a peer support program, which aims to provide proactive and responsive peer support for physicians who have experienced, or are experiencing, career-related stressors. It is a program designed for physicians by physicians, in which physicians offer to be there with and for their colleagues in difficult times.
When faced with a challenging career event, a physician can connect with the P2P program to be matched with a colleague from PEI trained in peer support. Physicians can also refer colleagues who have experienced a stressful event into the program once they have obtained their colleague’s permission to do so. A peer supporter will then reach out within 72 hours to coordinate a conversation to offer support from the perspective of someone who has “been there.” P2P interactions are private and confidential.
The goal of the program is to reduce work-related distress and drive cultural change by normalizing discussions about career-related stressors. It provides colleagues with opportunities to connect, share challenges, and develop coping strategies together. By doing so, physician wellbeing is enhanced, and we know this is key to sustaining careers and optimizing the quality of care we provide to our patients.
The program is not intended to replace clinical counseling, therapy, or coaching. Who will benefit from this program?
Current or retired Island physicians who are experiencing, or have experienced, a career-related stressor that may include:
- an adverse clinical event (e.g. an adverse patient outcome or medical error)
- a hospital or regulatory complaint
- an interpersonal/relational conflict with a patient or colleague
- an acute life stressor which impacts career
- struggles with burnout/moral injury

Once our Physician Program Lead receives contact information, a physician peer supporter will be matched and will reach out within 72 hours of submission.
