President and Board of Directors

Dr. Krista Cassell MD, FRCFC

On November 17, 2022, Dr. Krista Cassell assumed the role of MSPEI President for a one-year term. During the 168th MSPEI annual meeting, Dr. Cassell renewed her presidency term for 2023–24.

Dr. Cassell completed her undergraduate degree and medical training from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2003, she relocated to Prince Edward Island where she became a community based, general obstetrician/gynecologist in Charlottetown. Her professional interests include minimally invasive surgery, treatment of pelvic prolapse and quality and system improvement. Dr. Cassell enjoys teaching medical learners and allied health professionals in obstetrics. She is also an Associate Professor with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Cassell leads by example, as lifelong learning is vital to obtaining new knowledge and skills in her daily work. She has recently completed leadership courses, including the Master’s Certificate in Physician Leadership in 2018 and the Academic Certificate Program for Excellence in Quality Improvement (EQUIP) in 2022.

As a medical leader, Dr. Cassell has served as the Department Head of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital; the Co-Chair of the Midwifery Steering Committee and Provincial Cervical Screening Committee at Health PEI; and prior to assuming the role of MSPEI President, she served as a member of the MSPEI Board of Directors since 2017. Dr. Cassell has shared her knowledge and expertise on numerous Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada committees, and Health PEI and Canadian Medical Association committees.

Dr. Cassell has a vested interested in gender equity in medicine and is currently a member of the Canadian Women in Medicine organization. She strives to represent the variety of experiences that her physician colleagues face in their daily professional lives.

While the current state of medicine may seem daunting for some, Dr. Cassell is up for the challenge. “I bring many years of experience and the ability to hear from and understand the quieter voices of our membership.”

Dr. Cassell and her husband Chris have two teen sons, Nick and Zach. In her spare time, Dr. Cassell enjoys spending time with her family, including cheering them on at their sporting events. She also has a strong interest in sailboat racing, cycling, reading and baking.

“I am most looking forward to getting to know more of the physicians on PEI and hearing their stories and thoughts on both the challenges and opportunities that face our profession,” she said. “I am also very interested in the realm of physician health and wellness, and I hope to support and promote the excellent work being done in Prince Edward Island.”
